Just left Churchill Downs (Kentucky Derby) … Very fun!:) They let us take video of the activities! We could “ride” a horse in a race, commentate on a race, and there were many hats to see! We also placed bets on a race. Cost $6.00 (fake money) and Chris won $13.06 and I lost… We both picked the same horse to win and in the last 10 seconds the horse fell out of first & into second! :[
We were takin to the winners circle and got to see the track and different seat info. For example a seat could be $3.00 or $33.00 for a meal and drinks or Millionaire Row which you have to buy by the table. $1,000.00 a seat = $8,000.00 a table.... And you have to pay $60,000.00 insurance thing of some sort. So for $68,000.00 you can sit on Millionaire Row and watch a 2 minute race!:)
They have 1400 horses at the stables, they stay during race season and then shipped off to a new track for those races. Horses only have a once in a lifetime chance to race in the derby. Only horses at 3 years of age could race.
They have all the names of the derby winners lining the building trim, the signs in gold are the triple crown winners.
There is only one triple crown winner, who fathered another triple crown winner (Gallant Fox fathered Omaha; Gallant Fox won in 1930, Omaha won a few years after).
Secretariat won in 1973, a triple crown winner still holds records! He won in a minute and a half I believe.. When he died, they did an autopsy on him and his heart size was about 21lbs and the average horse size is 8lbs, so that explains his amazing-ness...
Whirlaway was a triple crown winner, but he was probably the "dumbest horse in racing" because during a race he would hear the crowd and run over to them... I think he was just friendly!
